Orion is back

 Video of Orion feeding

We recently harvested some bananas and of course all ripened at the same time. What we couldn't give away we gave to the birds and butterflies. We were hoping that the Orion (historis odious)butterfly will make its annual appearance.
In fact two made an appearance today, one was so busy feeding from underneath the table  that he took no notice of me.

The other one was also busy feeding on the table top that it totally ignored me.
Here I am trying to get its wings open and it didn't even budge.

  1. I would love to see odius someday on Barbados. I see them all the time in Venezuela. How´s the population of monarchs?

  2. Hello Alan,
thanks for stopping by and commenting. I have quite a few monarchs in the garden and I have run out of milkweeds. I plan to sow some more seeds of another type to keep things going.

  3. Wow, what an amazing butterfly. So well camouflaged on the underside, but so bright on the upper side. I really hope I see an Orion when I visit St Lucia in two weeks. Is this a good time of year for butterflies?

  4. Hello Nick,

As long as there is sunshine and flowers you will see butterflies. You will probably see lots more than we do in Barbados. Look out for the polydamas swallowtail, it is the only swallowtail without a tail but it is gorgeous. The Orion should be there as well probably near wooded areas. Enjoy your holiday!
