I was in Illinois attending my daughter's graduation in May and I took a stroll through the campus with my daughter. She was pointing out where she attended classes, this moment I will always cherish . Having THE EYE, I came across several plants that made me hyperventilate. Lauren couldn't help me even though she had spent five years there living on campus and passing these flowers every year! I was enthralled with these blooms and I am asking the world garden community to come to my rescue! Those Illinois garden bloggers who had their spring fling in Chicago in May this year (I'm soo jealous and Oh how I hate you all) will definitely know the names of these plants. Jean I hope you are reading this!

SOS Who are you? Can I grow you?

WOW! Those are gorgeous flowers! Please, let us know what they are if you find out.
ReplyDeleteYep... you definitely have "the eye", my friend. I can see why you would want to know the name of these plants and that just per chance you could make them grow in your beautiful garden!
ReplyDeleteI hope someone enlightens you... one of those lucky gardeners that travelled to Chicago just after you were there might well have the information you are looking for...
hugs,
meems
Oh, they are all so pretty! I'm going to take a stab at guessing what they are:
ReplyDeleteRed blooms look like some sort of peony.
Are the purple/lavender blooms lilacs?
White lacy blooms remind me of vibirnam.
Isn't it wonderful to see new and unknown flowers? It makes the heart beat faster:)
Happy day!
Karrita I think you are spot on. I will await a second opinion to make sure. Thank you and happy days to you.
ReplyDeleteMeems am making some headway on the identification process. I kinda guessed that the red was a peony and the white was viburnum but was not sure at all.
ReplyDeleteHi Helen:
ReplyDeleteI came to your blog from a forum on GardenWeb. I'm enjoying going through your blog. We live in Puerto Rico and share your love of gardening (though we are both new to extensive gardening, and life in the tropics!). You mentioned that "Pride of Barbados" is often planted as a hedge on the Island. We have a mature plant that I've taken seeds from and have started a lot of plants (boy are they vigorous!). We plan to use them to create a hedge. Have you ever noticed how close together folks space the plants to create a nice tight hedge? Thanks!
Miri
Nickandmiri I would plant them about a foot apart. That pink is beautiful and thank you for stopping by.
ReplyDeleteHi IslandGal! Sorry it took me a while to get here. Just so you know, I'm not an Illinois gardener so I can't give you specifics (I garden in north Louisiana) but I do believe My Mother's Garden is correct. Red peony (of some kind; they don't grow here so I'm a little ignorant), definitely lilacs are the lavender ones (they don't grow here either but they were blooming profusely when I went to Chicago Spring Fling),and viburnums are most likely the white blooms. Do you have two different kinds there? I can't quite tell. You certainly saw some of the most beautiful blooms that are up there! I hope this helps.
ReplyDeleteJean
Jean thanks very much, yes I posted two photos of viburnums and they are beautiful. I was very lucky by chance to see such beautiful blooms.
ReplyDeleteDear Helen,
ReplyDeleteI am hyperventilating too as I view the flowers you posted! They are so lovely!
Wanna say I appreciate your input in helping me to find the name for my yellow blooms, Gardenia Pfordii. I don't know if there's any seed from the plant. You must get it as the scent is so sweet and always put a smile on my face.
:o)
