Colours for Feburary

Teddy is recovering nicely. His thyroid levels are back to normal and his fur is growing back nicely. He has now joined the pack in the house after being away from them for the past six weeks with a badly broken front leg. If you remembered in a past post he was hit by a car in mid December. He walks with a slight limp and hopefully it will become less noticeable when it becomes fully healed.
Look at the love in his eyes as I take this photo!
Pride of Dominica  aka Bois Caribe (sabinea carinalis) has just finished blooming.

I am so in love with this shrub. I have to thank Maureen Farmer from Floraterra  Nursery who sold me this plant.

Albert Greenberg waterlilies surround a tiny Dauben.
Kalanchoe even though neglected have managed to put on a show.
 Clerodendron quadriloculare is now blooming

A special thank you to some very special people who follow my blog, Nick Morgan, Rachel Ramphal, Meta Reifer and Jane Price who have always inquired about my dogs especially Sandy and Teddy.  Jane I haven't heard from you recently and I hope all is well with you. Teddy is recovering nicely and has to go back to the vet in March. He is still on thyroid medication which will be reduced next month and another blood test will be taken when finished. We have become very creative on how to administer his medicine. He is very suspicious when we give him chunks of meat with the medication hidden in it. He has started chewing the chunks and then shaking his head until the tablet drops out. So when all else fails hubby whips out his precious Haagen Dazs vanilla ice cream and drops the pill in. Teddy has no problem with this sweet treat. This dog is just too smart for me.  Have a great week folks.

Earlier this month the rustic Bajan gardener visited  one of her favorite gardens in the open garden program organized by the local horticultural society. The garden located in Gibbes St. Peter, is owned by a long time resident  by the name of Ole Dam Mikkelsen who hails from Denmark. If you haven't seen the previous posts on his garden a few years ago please click on the above link. Ole's garden is and if not is the most beautiful garden on the island. This five plus acre garden boasts of rare and exclusive exotic plants from around the world and a huge collection of orchids.  This garden is every gardener's dream and  will never disappoint you. Have a great weekend friends and enjoy!

The Good, The Bad and The Buggly

Good news, the blue/purple lagerstromia speciosa tree I planted last weekend has new leaves.

Day three after planting with new leaves appearing.

One week after planting  the leaves are larger and plentiful.

Well now for the bad news, I can state that these are the fatalities of the great flood I had in April.

Three of my clerodendron quadriloculare have succumbed to flooding of their planting bed.  I will replace them in a few weeks time.

This photo shows what it was like when times were good.
Now all that is there is a lone shrub missing its three companions.

And now for the buggly: these Franginpani (Plumeria)moth caterpillars have taken over several of my Frangipani trees. I am sooo tired of knocking them off that I have actually given up on this tree.

They do give me the creeps and even though they are colourful and considered pretty (YUKKK) they do defoliate the trees in no time.  Good thing they do not kill the trees. Wishing all my gardening friends around the globe, a great weekend in the garden!

Blooming Friday

OMG please do not stare at that untidy mess under these Starbursts!  I will get around to tidying up as soon as my back is able LOLLL

Hello and welcome to Blooming Friday.  The theme today is contrast. I am showing the contrasting colours of the starburst clerodenron  (clerodendron quadriloculare) For more of blooming Friday please go over to Roses and stuff to what is blooming in gardens around the world.

I haven't been posting lately because of a back injury. A week  ago I had injured my back. How I did I manage to do this? Well... you see, I was tidying up the garden hose because I was expecting an important visitor.
As I wound the hose in a circle on the ground, I felt a very sharp pain on the right side of my back that made me stood still for a moment,  however I continued to finish the job. I then went on to mow the grass at the front with the push mower (it was self propelled) . The pain intensified  during the night and the next day. I couldn't sit up, bend nor lie on my side. Going to the loo was a feat for the fearless. To be honest I felt helpless and sorry for myself. Hubby went off to the druggist who sent me some anti inflammatory  tablets. The pain eased on the third day. Now I am almost pain free. Yesterday I mowed the grass, it was a bit painful sitting a long time on the mower but I bit the bullet and finished the job. Afterward I took another painkiller and was good to go when it kicked in. I tried touching my toes and with a bit of effort I touched them...Yipeee!  Have a great weekend my friends!
