Hello and welcome to GBBD where gardeners around the globe post what is blooming in their gardens! I would like to extend my sincerest sympathies for the people  of the Caribbean and the USA who were in the path of hurricanes Harvey, Irma and Jose.  Because of Barbados' position in the Atlantic Ocean hurricanes tend to pass to the north or if they do pass over us they are not very developed and are tropical storms.

We did get some well needed rain with Harvey but to see the devastation Harvey wrecked in Texas was unimaginable.
The Caribbean islands of Barbuda, Anguilla, Cayman islands, Turks and Caicos, Cuba, Haiti, BVI, USVI, Bahamas , St. Maarten, St. Bartholomew, Saba  the devastation is around 95%.  This is  a year many will never forget and many who claim that climate change is not real should rethink again. Islanders are strong and will rebuild again. The vegetation will rebound and in a few years providing there are no more hurricanes of that magnitude.
To see what is blooming in other gardens please go over to visit Carol at may dreams gardens.
Have a great weekend and those of you who can assist the islands that were devasted in any way please do.

Rain Rain come again

The rain was torrential and lasted for an hour or so accompanied by thunder and lightning.

The ground pond  filled for the first time this year. Will soon add some fish for mosquito control.
I had managed to get part of the grass mowed before the rain.
Avocados will be ready soon hopefully next month.
Shade house a bit more organized thanks to Kris my gardener. It was a mess.

The ponds were filled to the brim.
Excess water draining from the pond.

If you can't see the big grin I have on my face then believe me that I have been grinning since yesterday afternoon. We had our very first torrential rain in the north yesterday. This is the type of rain we need to fill our reservoirs for next year. I was becoming worried  because we are a water scarce island with no mountains  lakes  nor rivers. While most of our water goes underground with some run off into the sea.  Many people have installed water tanks and it is now mandated that all new homes have some sort of water collection.

We now have to be very careful of mosquitoes breeding places because of the Chikungunya virus spread by mosquitoes is increasing. Some neighbouring islands are rampant with it. I have one of those electronic tennis racquets to swipe the mossies  when they get near me. I also rub bay leaves on my exposed skin and I have noticed they don't get near me at all. The sun is out this morning drying out the grounds and hopefully it will remain so because today is laundry day for me. Have a great weekend my friends.

Hello and welcome to Garden Bloggers Bloom Day where gardeners around the world show what is blooming in their gardens. It has been hot hot hot and now it is raining torrents. The plants and trees are loving it. To see what is blooming in gardens around the globe please visit Carol at may dreams garden.
Avocados(zaboca) are in season along with golden apples (pommecythere) and limes. It is advisable not to harvest avocados after a heavy rainfall. Why? The avocado will rot when ripening because of the heavy water content.
Last weekend I spent a lovely Sunday afternoon with Nicole from a caribbean garden. She was in Barbados on business and invited me to lunch at the Crane Hotel where she was staying. She also instructed me to pack my swimsuit( I had to check  to see if any still fitted me and that they weren't suffering from dry rot). After lunch we ventured onto the beach and into the sea. It was a bit rough and the beach was covered with sea weed. I wasn't planning on going into the water but Nicole was game for it. So I decided to just walk along the water's edge until a humongous wave doused me and I joined Nicole. We both lost our sunglasses to the sea after another huge wave covered us and had to go buy new ones. I felt invigorated after and can you believe I live on the island and haven't been to the beach for over 2 years? It took Nicole from Anguilla  to get me into the sea. Well friends you must visit my lovely island and I promise you that I will accompany you to the beach. Ok?
Have a great week gardening!
