The ravages of drought

my breadfruit leaf fern has withered, it looks almost dead. I was told would comeback and I do hope so.

I have been off the radar last week with a bout of the flu and some computer problems. UGH...... it was bad, fever and a very sore throat as well as throwing up. After a week of drinking soup, I tried eating two slices of pizza on Saturday evening. I got through the first slice and decided to take on a second one. On the last bite I felt nauseated and made a dash for the bathroom. My stomach muscles and my tongue were very sore after that exercise. I told my hubby about it and his response was, "all that good pizza?" I feel a lot better now.

And the drought continues! We've had a shower of rain on Monday but by the next day the heat dried it up so we are back to the same old same old.

Monday was world water day and it has brought home to many of us that we must not take this precious commodity for granted. We all have to find ways of storing rain water for times like these. I have an area that water settles for a day after a heavy downpour. I am thinking of digging a fairly deep catchment area . My hubby is against it because he says it will dry up. But he doesn't seem to want to think about water storage. I will go ahead and call in the tractor to dig the existing area deeper and my helpers will compact the clay like soil. I will then decide if to go with a liner or not. Sometimes men can't see further than their noses.

Last Saturday I had a very pleasant visit from Nicole (in person) from Caribbean garden who was in Barbados for a few days. It was a pleasure meeting up with her and I look forward to seeing her on her next visit.

It's a bloomin' Friday again

Welcome to another blooming Friday! I've decided to do this blooming Friday with a new twist. For more blooming Friday please take a swim or paddle over to Katarina at roses and stuff. Have a wonderful weekend my fellow gardeners.

Plantain surprise

Many years ago a friend of mine Carol gave me this plantain recipe and I want to share it with you.

4-5 large ripe plantains (yellow with a few black spots)
some strong cheese I used a Danish Havarti
some grated parmesan cheese
some liqueur I used Galliano

Please use a shallow dish or flan dish. Peel and slice the plantains in 0.50 cm or 1/4 inch circles. Grease the pie dish with butter or use some cooking spray. Place the plantain circles on the bottom of the dish until it is generously covered. Layer thinly sliced or grated cheese onto the plantain circles. Add another layer of plantains and drizzle your favourite liqueur over the top and layer with cheese and a sprinkle of grated parmesan. Bake in a 375-400 degree oven until the top is golden brown. Serve on the side of your main meal. I served it with flying fish in a white wine and red curry sauce, veggies and basmati rice.

Ah feeling hot hot hot

It is very very hot and dry with no rain in sight. Yet many plants are still managing to put forth their colourful blooms. I am indoors during the hottest time of the day, that is between ten (10) am and three (3) pm. Cane fires and bush fires are plentiful mostly ignited by human hand. The fire service is exhausted and overworked. I am very tempted to join my fishy friends in the pond.

I love my husband because he is a sweetie pie and

1. He accepts me for who I am without trying to change me for the past 15 years we have been married.

2. He is away having surgery on his hand and for Valentines unknown to me, he made reservations at my favorite restaurant Champers for lunch with two of my friends. He then left an envelope with the voucher with a note that am not to open it before the 12th of this month, (I peeked at it anyway).

3. He loves animals and plants.

4. He makes me laugh

5. I would marry him all over again.

6. He balances our marriage...I am the spitfire and he is the coolant.

7. He is not a fix it guy but he is married to a fix it gal.

8. We are renovating our kitchen and it was he who suggested that we go ahead and says whatever I decide to do it is ok with him (as long as it is within the budget).

Dry times and blue skies

All my Mango trees are in full bloom as a result of the dry spell, they would normally bloom around April/May. I hope that they will set fruit.

"RAIN RAIN come down and wash the whole of Bridgetown" we would sing as children playing with our friends. This is one time we would welcome such a thing. Yep things are dry......the ground is cracking making it difficult to traverse parts of the garden. And only blue skies are insight. I get very irritated when I hear visitors say that they don't want it to rain when they are on holiday. I would interject that we need the rain and without it we cannot eat, bathe and there will be no gardens to visit. So I am all smiles when I see the rain. For me it is eau de vie!
